Bolton endured a torrid time in the Championship during the previous campaign, with their poor showings on the pitch overshadowed by their highly-publicized abysmal financial situation. Their players went on strikes on two occasions due to unpaid wages, while the club went into administration in May due to unpaid tax bills. As a consequence, they were docked twelve points by the FA and will start the upcoming campaign with this deficit. With the players not being paid in weeks and the majority of them being on one-year contract, there is little surprise that the Trotters saw an exodus of players over the course of the summer. As few as 16 players were still at the club at the time of the writing of this guide and more are reportedly looking to leave. Bolton's situation is such that the main concern of their fans at the moment is the off-field side of things, as the club are battling for survival and are reportedly close to a takeover. It remains to be seen what will happen once a takeover is completed. Of course, the new owners will have to find the funds to pay the players the money that they are due, while bringing in new players might be a step to far. At the moment, it is difficult to even guess what kind of a squad the Trotters will have in a month's time, but it is pretty clear that a second consecutive relegation seems inevitable.

Target

Their genuine target for the season will be to find a way to become a functioning club again. Their chances of staying up are difficult to judge and largely depend on what happens after their takeover.
