Only a strong finish to the 2020 season ensured IFK Gothenburg avoided the play-offs or even relegation. In the middle part of the season, they went through a spell of 1 win in 17 matches. New coach Roland Nilsson arrived in September and eventually performances improved. The big move from IFK was their midfield star Kharaishvili to Ferencvaros. Striker Abraham, who made 27 appearances last season, has joined Degerfors. Centre-back Da Graca has headed to VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands. The rest of the leavers made few appearances last season and will have little impact on IFK’s strength. Arriving from Kalmar is a solid goalkeeper, Soderberg, and he should provide ongoing competition for Anestis. Equally seasoned and solid is defender Johansson. Although at the veteran stage, Hamsik is a highly talented acquisition to their midfield. Thern is another highly experienced midfield operator while Yacob offers energy and potential. Sigthorsson is hoping to reignite his career after stagnation at AIK with assistance from Norlin who joins from Varbergs. International veterans Wendt and Berg have also signed. It looks as though IFK will be a solid unit with Nilsson now fully established as coach. But where are the goals coming from? A lot of responsibility rests at the feet of 35-year-old Berg, and he is not available until mid-July.

Target

A season of growth and stability with improved home performances. Nilsson seems the man to deliver this, but a title challenge or European football looks unlikely.
