Football Season Guide

SC Cambuur returned to Eredivisie after five years having won the Keuken Kampioen Divisie with 92 points, 15 more than runners-up Go Ahead Eagles. The promotion actually comes with a year of delay, given that the previous season they were leading Eerste Divisie, but, after the suspension of the championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were denied the promotion in the top flight despite an 11-point advantage over the second placed team. In these two seasons the team has been led by Henk de Jong, who unsurprisingly has been retained on the bench again this year. De Jong, like most teams in the Netherlands, generally opts for a very offensive 4-3-3 system...Cambuur scored 109 goals in the last season! The top scorer was Robert Mühren with 38 goals (having scored 26 in the previous one at the time of the suspension), who unfortunately returned to Zulte Waregem at the end of the loan. The main changes took place in the attack as, beside Mühren, wingers Giovanni Korte and Ragnar Oratmangoen left. At the moment the club have added two centre-forwards, Tom Boere and Sam Hendriks, but no other wingers. They can still rely on Issa Kallon, Michael Breij and Nick Doodeman, but would probably need other purchases. In defense experienced Sven Niewport left and was replaced by young and interesting Marco Tol from Volendam. Cambuur’s roster clearly lacks depth, and they definitely need to add some players before the start of the season.
