Reality caught up with Aberdeen last season as Rangers and Kilmarnock lept above them to drag them down to a fourth-placed finish, after a year of real inconsistency. Over the course of the summer, it looks as though the Dons have been weakened further with some major losses to their squad. Long-term captain Graeme Shinnie has departed for Derby County, whilst left-wing maestro Gary Mackay-Steven left for the MLS. Fortunately for Aberdeen, they managed to lure experienced Championship midfielder Craig Bryson to Pittodrie to fill in Shinnie's role. Bryson has proven a real success in England, and his experience and ball-winning skills should see him replace Shinnie successfully enough. It also looks as though McInnes has reacted to Mackay-Steven's departure with success too. Jon Gallagher has been brought in from Atlanta to play down the left, whilst Ryan Hedges will challenge Niall McGinn down the right flank. Both men look energetic to say the least, but big question marks still persist over their consistency levels. A return to the club for Ash Taylor to replace the outgoing Mark Reynolds looks shrewd on paper, but his injury in Europe is a blow. Once again, expect Mikey Devlin and Scott McKenna to dominate that centre-back area, with Shay Logan and either Andrew Considine or Greg Leigh down either flank, Aberdeen still look there to be got at in the centre of midfield, however. Too often last season they failed to boss games enough from the engine room and, judging by their early European displays, that continues to be the case heading into the new season.

Target

Regaining their "best of the rest" status will be on Derek McInnes' mind. 3rd place and another European spot would do nicely.

Season Review
2018/2019

№4: Aberdeen

Despite three trips to Hampden this season, it was ultimately a disappointing campaign for fourth-placed Aberdeen. Derek McInnes made a host of poor signings heading into the campaign. The likes of Stephen Gleeson, Tommie Hoban, James Wilson, and Chris Forrester failed to bring the experience and class McInnes was hoping for. Once again, the season became reliant on the performances of Graeme Shinnie. His drive and energy in the midfield consistently determined what kind of performance Aberdeen were going to put in. The Dons did, however, discover a gem by signing Lewis Ferguson from Hamilton. He's managed eight goals and eight assists in 44 appearances, and has proven to be an aggressor for Aberdeen as well as a creator. McInnes has also managed to uncover several promising youngsters. These include the likes of Connor McLennan and Bruce Anderson, who are worth watching next season. This year, however, McInnes had too many players who couldn't make the step-up to Aberdeen. Wilson and Stevie May were massive letdowns in the final third, whilst Sam Cosgrove only scored 20 of his 21 goals from December onwards. But Aberdeen's problem was that they simply didn't have enough chemistry in the squad or character. On the big occasion, Aberdeen majorly let themselves down, and mainly due to a lack of quality in the final third. McInnes goes into the summer having lost second place due to this year's fourth place finish. Losing the likes of Gary Mackay-Steven and Shinnie will be tough. It's going to be a summer of clearing out the deadwood and replacing it with quality. He's done it before, and the Dons manager will need to show those street-smarts again.
