Stadium | FC Augsburg are based in the city of Augsburg, close to Munich in the south of Germany. They play their home games at the Augsburg Arena, a very modern stadium that was opened in 2009 to replace the Rosenaustadion. Everything about the venue is modern, from the comfortable seating to the technology in use to the climate-neutral nature of the ground. With its closed corners, it has an arena feel. Even with a fairly large capacity for a club of FC Augsburg’s size, at 31,000, it is often full and it is an atmospheric stadium. |
Recent History | FC Augsburg have been permanently in the Bundesliga since 2011, but this is not common for the club. They had never been in the Bundesliga before then, often spending time in the third or four tiers. In fact, the club even struggled to obtain a license for the regional leagues around the turn of the century due to financial problems. The arrival of local businessman Walther Seinsch as chairman helped rescue the club and little by little they were able to solve their financial issues and begin climbing the leagues. Under coach Jos Luhukay, the Bavarian club came close to promotion to the Bundesliga and reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal in 2010/11, before finally achieving their first ever promotion to the top flight the following season. Since then, they’ve usually floated around mid-table, although they did have one really good season in the Bundesliga when they finished fifth in 2014/15 and qualified for the Europa League. |
