Luzern enjoyed successful season despite slow start and in the end the great attacking football offered brought the team place in Europe and a trophy. It all started very slow for the Blues as they went winless in the first 7 rounds (D3 L4). However, strong end to 2020 (W3 D2 L1) meant that mid-table comfort was secured for the winter break.
All season Luzern had problems in defence and in more than half of their games they conceded 2 goals or more. However, the true strength of the team were their forward actions with playmaker Schaub and top scorer Sorgic very effective. This saw Luzern having the second strongest attack in the league, with only champions Young Boys scoring more goals.
The first 10 rounds after the winter break were when Luzern played their best football (W5 D3 L2) and come mid-March they even climbed in the top 3. However, this was around the time when the decisive Swiss Cup matches started too and Luzern focused their main attention on that competition. This led to several late defeats in the league and as result Luzern couldn’t catch the top 3.
However, all this paid off as Luzern lifted the Swiss Cup after beating St. Gallen 3:1 in the final and not only they won a trophy, but also next season they will be playing in Europe.
Strengthening of the back line is needed in the summer months, also not certain if big star Schaub will return as he was only on loan at the club this season. Adding depth in attack is required too as apart from Sorgic the only other typical centre forward in the squad right now is an 18-year-old player.
