Stadium | Genoa spent their earliest and most successful playing between Piazza d’Armi del Campasso Ponte Carrega (where the first official game in the whole country took place on January 1898) and San Gottardo. It was the 22nd of January 1911 when they inaugurated the new Marassi Stadium. The arena changed name to Luigi Ferraris in 1933 and is still their home more than a century later. The Stadium was completely reconstructed from the ground up between 1987 and 1989 in preparation for the 1990 World Cup. The only part to remain untouched was the access to the gallery area. During the 26-month-long works, Genoa were still able to play their home games in the stadium. In order to meet UEFA standards, which would allow them to play the European competitions in Genoa, the Stadium underwent further works and its capacity was reduced from 40,000 to the current 36,599. |
Recent History | Despite being the oldest and one of the most successful Italian clubs ever, Genoa have not won any relevant silverware over the past 80 years. After reaching the UEFA Cup semifinals in 1991-1992, they faced a dark decade between the late 1990s and the early 2000s. They dropped to Serie B in 1994-1995 and then to Serie C in 2004-2005, after being punished for attempted match-fixing despite achieving promotion back to the top flight. Meanwhile, the toy maker Enrico Preziosi bought the club in 2003: he invested heavily in order to bring Genoa back to the pinnacle of Italian football. Unfortunately success was limited with a 5th place finish in 2008-2009 and 6th place in 2014-2015 which meant Europa League qualification. Failure to be granted a UEFA licence meant they could not play in the competition. For both of those highlights, Gian Piero Gasperini was the man at the helm. Since then, Genoa’s main aim has been to avoid relegation. |
