Stadium | Hertha Berlin’s stadium is the famous Olympiastadion in the German capital, the venue that was built for the 1936 Olympics. There is no national stadium in Germany, but this is the closest thing to it as the DFB-Pokal cup final is held there each year. It also hosted the 2006 World Cup final and the 2015 Champions League final. Like most Olympic stadiums, this ground has an athletics track. That, along with the huge capacity, means that atmosphere at matches can often be quite tame. The capacity is currently 75,000, but Hertha Berlin tend to draw average attendances of around 50,000. |
Recent History | The capital city club was a member of the very first edition of the Bundesliga in 1963 and has regularly been in the top division since then. This fact helped establish the club as the most popular one in the city. Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the club also attracted fans from East Berlin and really grew at that point. In recent times, there have been some highs and lows and promotions and relegations, but they’ve been in the top flight non-stop since 2013, even qualifying for Europe in 2016/17 courtesy of their sixth-placed finish. With Berlin such a large city, Hertha Berlin have benefited from this talent pool and often have bright local talent representing the club. |
