Stadium | In 2006, as Hoffenheim were rising through the divisions, the club directors decided to build a larger stadium, which is the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. By the time this was opened in 2009, they’d already won promotion to the Bundesliga and this venue helped them establish themselves as a top-flight club. Even though the club and city are both small compared to other clubs in the division, this 30,000-capacity venue is often full or close to full. |
Recent History | Hoffenheim are a club on the up and up and up. They were as low as the fifth tier of German football as recently as the 1999/2000 season and have won several promotions since then to establish themselves as a top-flight club. They were promoted to the fourth tier in 2000, to the third tier in 2001, to the second tier in 2007 and to the Bundesliga in 2008. Since then, Hoffenheim have continually been in the top division and this achievement should not underestimated considering the size of the club. Their success has been built on an excellent scouting and recruitment department, that has seen them benefit – even if sometimes just for a season or two – from top talents such as Roberto Firmino, Serge Gnabry, David Alaba, Kevin Volland and Gylfi Sigurdsson. The coaching of Julian Nagelsmann, who was there between 2016 and 2019, also helped the club take steps forward and they even reached the Champions League. |
