Stadium | Inter first played their home games in the Ripa Ticinese ground, near the Naviglio Grande, where on match days a man in a boat had to collect the stray balls which had found their way into the river. Between 1913 and 1930 they played in the Campo Goldoni, a stadium they were eventually forced to abandon following the collapse of a stand. As a result of that forced change they had to play in the Arena Civica until 1947, sharing the ground with Milan between 1941 and 1945. From 1947 they moved to San Siro Stadium, re-christened “Giuseppe Meazza” in 1980, which was AC Milan’s home since its construction in 1926. The property of the municipality of Milan, the Stadium originally had just 1 level and hosted 35,000 supporters. Several refurbishments have steadily improved the stadium. In 1955 a second ring was added and capacity reached the peak of 100,000 supporters; for the 1990 World Cup a third level was added. In 2008 capacity was reduced to 80,000 and more recently 76,000. Despite a Category 4 rating in UEFA Stadium ratings, Inter and Milan are currently discussing the construction of a new stadium with the local authorities. |
Recent History | Inter was bought by Massimo Moratti from Ernesto Pellegrini in 1995. The new President wanted to repeat the triumphs overseen by his father Angelo in the 1960s, when they won back-to-back Champions Leagues. It took Moratti 10 years and an estimated €1.5 billion of his own money, but he eventually succeeded. Helped somewhat by the Calciopoli scandal, Inter were given a clear run at the honours in Italian football. In all they won 5 Scudetto titles, 1 Champions League, 4 Coppa Italia trophies, 4 Italian Super Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup in 2010. Beyond that glorious period they have failed to mount a Scudetto challenge and even failed to qualify for Europe on 3 occasions. In 2013, Moratti was replaced by the first foreign President in the club’s history, the Indonesian Erick Thohir. In 2018, Steven Zhang became the youngest Club President in Inter’s history at just 26 years of age. It was hoped that in bringing two former Juventus men in Giuseppe Marotta as CEO for Sport and Antonio Conte as head coach, the only Italian club to have never played in Serie B will see its fortunes revived. The Scudetto win proved this approach to be spot on as Conte and 21 goal Romelu Lukaku guided Inter to the 20/21 title. |
