It proved a tough campaign for Motherwell under Steve Robinson last season, as they failed to make the top six then ultimately failed to pip St Johnstone to seventh. But now it's all change regarding the squad. 10 players in and 11 players out marks the annual summer revamp at Fir Park. The notable departures were the likes of Curtis Main, Jake Hastie, Chris Cadden and Carl McHugh respectively. Outside of the quartet, the rest were deadwood that Robinson will have been pleased to get off the wage bill. Already, however, it looks as though Motherwell have recruited wisely. Their Betfred Cup performances have seen Christian Ilic, Jermaine Hylton and young youth product James Scott all shine. Despite the 10 that have come in, however, Motherwell's team may remain fairly recognisable this season. They've managed to hold onto some of their best young talent in David Turnbull and Allan Campbell respectively, whilst recognisable Premiership faces in Declan Gallagher and Liam Polworth will add depth to the defence and midfield too. Turnbull, of course, will be out for the first several months of the season. Many of the new Steelmen signings are yet to make an impact and, as of yet, only Robinson will know who he plans on starting regularly from them. But Ilic, Hylton and Polworth certainly look like regulars. Motherwell look a lot stronger going forward, and have created a plethora of chances in each of their Betfred Cup games so far. They've yet to show any real signs of weakness, but an out-and-out replacement at right-mid still hasn't been found.

Target

Missing out on the top six was a real frustration for Motherwell last season. They'll be looking to right those wrongs this term and secure a place in the top half.

Season Review
2018/2019

№8: Motherwell

Steve Robinson will have been hoping for a top-six finish at the start of the season, but finishing up in eighth was made more acceptable given the riproaring success of the club's youth development. At the start of the season, the likes of Curtis Main, Carl McHugh, and Chris Cadden would've been the players to look to for performances this season. Instead, it's the youth players like David Turnbull, Jake Hastie, and James Scott that have provided the encouragement. The first half of the season was close to a disaster. Motherwell were trying to avoid a relegation battle, but were toiling for consistency. Only when Turnbull came into the side at the end of 2018 did the Steelmen start becoming an energetic force. Their main tool was the dynamic partnership of Turnbull and Allan Campbell. Hastie returned for the second half of the season from a loan spell, whilst Gboly Ariyibi signed until the end of the season. That gave Robinson the pace, energy, and flair necessary to pack more of a punch going forward. They avoided the relegation dogfight comfortably in the end, but were still a soft touch at the back too often, particularly on the counter. The season ended without being a classic, but the promising work of the youth academy was on full show. Motherwell will have to deal with the departures of Ariyibi and Hastie, whilst speculation will continue over the summer about the future of the likes of Turnbull and Campbell. It's going to be a colossal summer for the Steelmen.
