Stadium | St James' Park (opened 1892) Capacity: 52,354 Pitch Size: 105m x 68m Newcastle's attempts to expand their stadium in the early '80s proved frustratingly slow and were hampered by a lack of funding. It wasn't until the 90's that under Sir John Hall's chairmanship they had the capital and the property development experience to make progress rebuilding the ground. That progress saw the Leazes End rebuilt as the Sir John Hall stand, the Gallowgate end rebuilt and a new pitch installed. Further redevelopment took place under new chairman Freddy Shepherd as a second tier was added over the Milburn Stand and capacity was taken to over 52,000. |
Recent History | https://www.pif.gov.sa/en/pages/homepage.aspxhttps://www.pif.gov.sa/en/pages/homepage.aspxNewcastle fans will point to the Kevin Keegan era as the closest they have come to achieving glory in the Premier League. In 1995/96 and 1996/97 they finished runners up with an attack spearheaded by the likes of Shearer and Ginola. In the years after those near misses Newcastle United's fortunes have not fared well. The likes of Kenny Dalglish, Bobby Robson & Graeme Souness failed to win any silverware for the club which was eventually relegated in 2008/09 under Alan Shearer. The legendary striker was thrust into the managerial hot seat after Keegan stepped down in his second spell at the helm (citing interference from the club in player acquisition) and was replaced by Joe Kinnear. When the latter was forced to step aside due to heart surgery, Shearer took over. The chaos of the club's relegation took place under Mike Ashley who had acquired the club in 2007. It was an indication of what was to come for the Magpies in subsequent years. He even put the club up for sale that summer, only to backtrack once the season was underway. In 2009/10 Newcastle won The Championship and returned to the Premier League thanks to the guidance of Chris Hughton. He would only last until December of the new season and was replaced by Alan Pardew despite having made a strong start to the campaign. A 12th place finish under Pardew would provide some justification for the 5 and a half year contract that he was given by the club. In 2011/12 further progress came with a 5th place finish and qualification for the Europa League. Another relegation season came in 2015/16 after Steve McClaren had managed the club for 9 months. His replacement, Rafael Benitez was unable to avoid the drop. Under Benitez the club would return to the top flight at the first time of asking and he subsequently guided the team to a 10th place finish in the Premier League. Unfortunately for Newcastle the Spaniard would leave apparently unconvinced that Mike Ashley was fully committed to investing in the team. With the end of the Mike Ashley tenure came the dawn of the Public Investment Fund era. With the Magpies now backed by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia ($492 billion in assets), the sky is literally the limit for one of football's perennial underachievers. |
