After winning the regular season and then making it all the way to the Grand Final 2 years ago, Glory took a step back last term when they just about made the play-offs, edged Adelaide by single point, and then exited the post-season early. It was a tough campaign and for long coach Popovic looked to have lost his magic, he kept pushing with a 3-man back line despite the many goals conceded and also snubbed decent players just to give his 2 sons playing time. Ultimately this led to Popovic being sacked and Glory are now taking a risk as they appointed ex-Spanish international Richard Garcia in charge, with this first such role for Garcia who only just ended his playing career. Garcia is expected to be heavily assisted on the job by the 38-year-old captain Castro, who is also his countryman. Glory released several aging regulars in the off-season, but also added several experienced players to their ranks. Ota is an ultra-aggressive left-back that has the potential to achieve 10+ assists for the campaign, while proven goalscorer Keogh returns for his fourth spell at Perth and he’s expected to form a lethal partnership in attack with Fornaroli. Glory continue to have a squad full of experienced and pretty good players with the main question being is Garcia ready to be manager. Having so many old players in the squad (12 players age 30 or over) should help him as most of them hardly need any coaching as they know pretty well what to do. If as expected Fornaroli and Keogh provide many goals in attack, Glory would be a team to watch out for.

Target

Glory target return to the Grand Final and, despite the inexperience of their manager, they still seem to have everything needed to achieve this goal.

Season Review

2019/2020

№6: Perth Glory

Glory took a step back this term. After winning the regular season a year earlier and then dramatically losing the Grand Final the Violets had much bumpier ride in 2019/20 and they only just made the play-offs, finished 1 point ahead of Adelaide, before losing the semi-final vs. Sydney FC 0:2. Slow start (W1 D3 L3) made Glory play catch up straight away and only thanks to 2-month unbeaten run between December and February (W7 D3) top 6 finish was secured. The form of the team after the COVID-break was not good, with this directly related to the fact that their captain and most creative player Diego Castro refused to play in the bubble due to COVID-fears. Star striker Fornaroli played his part during the 10-game unbeaten run that generated most of the points, scored 9 goals in those 10 games, but the problem was that his contributions outside those 2 months were sparse (just 4 goals in other 18 games). Kilkenny was the most consistent performer throughout the season, with 39-year-old goalkeeper Reddy also solid between the posts for most games. Glory’s defending was problematic all campaign and the Violets never really looked comfortable with the 3-man back line, but coach Popovic never changed it anyway. Despite the setback season Glory had been contenders in both seasons under Popovic and it won’t take much improving for the team to be amongst the main favourites again. For starters Castro need to be back on the pitch and Fornaroli needs more support up front.
