All is not well on the South Coast as Portsmouth head into another season looking to find their way out of League One. Danny Cowley replaced the unpopular Kenny Jackett for the last month of the 2020/21 season but the side he inherited missed out on a play-off place on the final day of the campaign. They finished with one more point this time around but it only earned them a 10th placed finish. This represents another year of failure for Portsmouth fans but Cowley has avoided most of the blame, with owner Michael Eisner being held responsible for not giving him the financial support to compete with their promotion rivals. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu will take some replacing having enjoyed a spectacular season whilst on loan from Manchester City, although joining bitter rivals Southampton this summer won’t have improved his popularity. Josh Griffiths has joined on a season-long loan from West Bromwich Albion, could be a shrewd addition. The experienced Marlon Pack will strengthen the midfield after returning from Bristol City whilst striker Joe Pigott has arrived as part of the deal that saw last season’s key man Marcus Harness sold to promotion rivals Ipswich Town. He has only signed on a season-long loan however which was seen as yet more evidence of Eisner’s lack of ambition. The owner has countered those accusations by signing off on a deal to bring Accrington Stanley striker Colby Bishop to Fratton Park for a cool half-a-million pounds. It is certainly a statement signing and will give the Pompey faithful some much-needed optimism.

Target

Play-offs. It is the minimum requirement for Portsmouth fans and, despite the signing of Bishop, Cowley still has more work to do in the transfer market to make it a realistic ambition.

Season Review
2020/2021

№8: Portsmouth

Portsmouth continued to underperform with another disappointing season. Selling out fan ownership to American Michael Eisner was supposed to be the golden ticket back to the Premier League but it has been far from plain sailing for Pompey, who missed out on a play-off place on the final day of the season. Manager Kenny Jackett was under pressure even before they were beaten in the play-off semi-finals last summer and the criticism continued as the side made a steady if unspectacular start to the season. With such an unpopular style success was required and a penalty shoot-out defeat to League 2 Salford City, after being outplayed in the EFL Trophy final at a rain-sodden Wembley, finally marked the end for Jackett. Danny Cowley signed a short-term deal to try and get Pompey into the play-offs and despite showing some improved form; the weak character of the side was fatally exposed in a final day defeat to Accrington Stanley. There is likely to be some significant fall-out following their latest failure although Cowley has impressed the club’s hierarchy and looks like being given the chance to take the club up next season. Craig MacGillivray, Jack Whatmouth, Sean Raggett and Lee Brown did enough to remain part of the squad next season but Cowley will be busy with the likes of Ronan Curtis and Tom Naylor set for summer departures.
