Club Profile | Nickname: Le Racing |
Stadium | Racing Club de Strasbourg played their earliest games at Haemmerié Gardens. In 1921 a wooden stand was built and from that time it became known as the Stade de la Meinau. It reached a capacity of 18,000 in 1930 after the addition of a second wooden stand. It was 1951 when a concrete central grandstand was added while new terraces were erected behind the goals. The Stadium was completely reconstructed in 1984 for the European Championship and it reached its maximum capacity in 1992 when 39,000 watched a match against Olympique Marseille. In order to meet the latest safety standards Stade de la Meinau had its capacity reduced to 29,000 in 2001. In 2008, the club came up with a project for a new arena called Eurostadium. The idea was that a group of private investors would fund the build, but the plans never got off the ground. A reconstruction of the Stade de la Meinau was considered for the European Championship in 2016, however spiraling costs would eventually see the local authority pull the plug. Between 2017 and 2019 a scaled down renovation took place following Racing’s return to the Ligue 1. |
Recent History | Racing Strasbourg started making their name in French football between the 1930s and 1950s. During that time they lost 2 Coupe de France finals, before lifting the trophy in 1951. Having achieved their second success in the Coupe in 1966, they became French champions for the first time in 1979. There followed a long period of decline which was only interrupted in the late 1990s when they won the Intertoto Cup and the Coupe de la Ligue. The would win the latter again in 2005. Subsequent years turned out to be disastrous for Strasbourg as they first dropped down to the Championnat National in 2010 and were then relegated to the CFA 2, the 5th tier following bankruptcy in 2011. The following season Strasbourg started a relentless march back to the top. In just 5 years they returned to Ligue 1. Having made it back to the highest division they succeeded in avoiding relegation and in 2019 won their 3rd Coupe de la Ligue. With that win came the customary qualification to Europe. |
