Stadium | Schwarzwald-Stadion is the smallest stadium in the Bundesliga with its capacity of 24,000. But it is often one of the most packed stadiums as almost every game is a sell-out or close to it. Given the desire to increase the capacity of the stadium, a referendum was held in 2015 to decide what to do. It was decided that expanding this stadium wasn’t profitable, so a new one is to be built with a 35,000-capacity near the airport. They’re scheduled to move in in time for the 2020/21 season. |
Recent History | Christian Streich is Mr Freiburg. He is by far the coach in the Bundesliga who has been in his role the longest, having been in charge at Freiburg since 2011. Before that, he was an assistant manager and a youth coach there, while he even played for the club during his playing days. Streich has overseen the club’s consolidation as a regular Bundesliga team over these past few years. They only ever made it to the top tier for the first time in 1993 and yo-yoed back up and down the divisions. Following four years in a row in Bundesliga 2 between 2005/06 and 2008/09, they came back up and Streich took over shortly afterwards. Since then, they’ve remained in the Bundesliga apart from one year, in 2015/16, when they went down and responded finishing top of Bundesliga 2. They’ve turned themselves into a regular mid-table Bundesliga club and Streich deserves all the credit for that. |
