Stadium | The Veltins-Arena has been home to Schalke since 2001. This 62,000-capacity ground is one of the most modern in all of Europe and is architecturally quite unique as it has a retractable roof that can be completely closed and also a centrally suspended scoreboard that was the first of its kind for a European football stadium. Schalke are one of the best-supported teams in all of Germany and regularly pull in the third-largest attendances – only behind Bayern Munich and their rivals Borussia Dortmund. The stadium is often completely full. |
Recent History | Despite coming in as runners-up on five occasions in the 21st century, Schalke still haven’t won a Bundesliga title. They won the German championship on seven occasions before the founding of the Bundesliga in 1963, but haven’t won it since. They have, though, been an almost permanent fixture in the top division. Apart from the 1981/82, 1983/84, 1988/89, 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons, they’ve been a Bundesliga side ever since the league started and have regularly been a Champions League team during the 21st century. There have also been a few DFB-Pokal wins, five in total and three of them this century. Their most recent cup success came in 2010/11. |
