Stadium | The Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán might be the most atmospheric stadium in all of Spain. Several opposition coaches and players have admitted so over the years. From the moment the fans bellow out the club anthem before the game to the full-time whistle, the atmosphere is incredible at this 43,000-capacity ground that is often full. With high stands than look down on the pitch, it has a coliseum-esque feel and it’s not a place most teams like to visit. |
Recent History | In the 21st century, Sevilla have made the Europa League their favourite competition. Before 2006, they’d never won a continental title in their entire existence, since their founding in 1890. But now they’ve won the Europa League – previously known as the UEFA Cup – on five occasions, winning one UEFA Super Cup as well. While they have had some great coaches like Juande Ramos, Marcelino and Unai Emery, this has mostly been made possible thanks to their legendary sporting director Monchi. Barring a two-year stint at Roma, he has been in charge of the club’s sporting department since the turn of the century and has done an excellent job of unearthing undiscovered talent and then selling it on for large profits that can be reinvested. Sevilla have become a selling and stepping stone club, but one that is competitive in the meantime and one that usually finishes around fourth to sixth position in the league table. |
