After back-to-back difficult seasons of barely surviving in the division Darmstadt are preparing for much more successful campaign this time around. The appointment of Grammozis in charge in the spring brought positive change to the displays and the Lilies are hoping that the development of this trend will continue. Apart from their long-serving goalkeeper none of the other players that left the club in the summer are very important. The 2 other regulars were not used much by Grammozis since he was appointed. With Schuhen signed to become the new main goalkeeper and several other interesting signings Darmstadt look very solid squad indeed. The depth is good and there are cover options for pretty much every position on the pitch. Kempe and Heller will continue playing important roles in attack where they are expected to provide the giant Dursun with quality crosses. Big things are also expected from striker Platte this season after 18 months of injury-troubles are hopefully behind him. Schnellhardt and Palsson are likely to be the back bone of the midfield, with both of them also expected to be helping the defence when this is needed. Left-back Holland remains the team’s captain while, on the other side of the back 4, which Grammozis uses almost exclusively, Herrmann now has very decent back up option in Egbo. It seems that the new season will see much more focus on the flanks when going forward, with the gaffer making sure to have options down the wings with the signings of 4 new players.

Target

Darmstadt target top half finish and the squad seems strong enough for this to be an achievable goal. Still not enough quality to challenge for promotion though.

Season Review
2019/2020

№5: SV Darmstadt 98

Despite slow start to season, only 1 win in the opening 9 rounds, Darmstadt were very solid hosts throughout the entire campaign and this was more than enough to keep them safe. Their only home league defeat during the entire season was against champions Arminia, with the points accumulated from the other home matches more than enough for comfortable existence. The high finish was achieved thanks to impressive form in 2020. After the winter break the Lilies accumulated 9 of their 13 league wins, while losing just 3 of their last 19 matches. The main reason why Darmstadt never got close enough to the top 3 was their away form though. Unable to beat top 10 team on the road up until late May. Only late in the campaign showed improvement in that department with away wins over Erzgebirge and in the last round over already promoted Stuttgart team. All season the goals of top scorer Dursun helped a lot, but the true leader of the team was main playmaker Palsson. Leading the league for most successful tackles, highest percentage of accurate short passes, most big chances created by a midfielder and most blocked shots he was the true heartbeat of the entire team week in week out. Coach Grammozis is leaving the club this summer and this makes it unknown if and how many players will follow him out and who will be the next man in charge. Depending on the appointment and the transfer activity it will become clearer what the goals for next season will be.
