Stadium | London Stadium (opened 2012) Capacity: 60,000 Pitch Size: 105m x 68m West Ham play their football at the Olympic Stadium built for London 2012. The move from their former home, The Boleyn Ground, or Upton Park was not without controversy. Spearheaded by owners David Gold and David Sullivan, the attractions of moving to the Olympic Stadium were several. Increased ticket receipts in an existing sporting structure, increased potential for the club to grow and according to the hopes of the owners, the prospect of challenging for major honours. West Ham are tenants at the London Stadium, paying a mere £2.5 million a year. That said, the negatives are also numerous. In leaving their spiritual home and the caldron of Upton Park, West Ham have taken up residency in a vast sporting arena designed for athletics. There is no question that the atmosphere at home games has suffered with fans a long way from the action, despite stands being modified for football. The club is based in what is a soulless Olympic Park, rather than Upton Park with community and club intertwined. |
Recent History | West Ham fans would argue that their team has failed to live up to expectations in recent years. An FA Cup final in 2005/06 was a rare appearance in the latter stages of a knock out tournament and saw them lose on penalties to Liverpool. They had previously beaten Arsenal in the 1980 edition of the same competition. Previous honours have included winning the Cup Winners Cup in 1965 and the Intertoto Cup in 1999. West Ham's best ever league finish was 3rd in 1985/86 when playing in the First Division. Fans would point to the fact that 3 Hammers were members of the 1966 England World Cup team. Namely Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst. Recent history left the West Ham faithful never quite sure whether their team will manage a top half finish, or end up in a relegation scrap. The club has dropped out of the Premier League on 2 occasions (2002/03 and 2010/11), but after strong showings in the second tier, orchestrated returns to the top flight in 2005 and 2012. Lifting the Europa Conference League trophy in 2023 brought with it mixed emotions in East London. Finally some silverware for the Hammers faithful to celebrate, but the victory also marked the end of the Declan Rice era at the club as he was transferred across London to Arsenal. |
