Football Season Review

№16: Ascoli

Ascoli spent the entire season in the area between the playoffs and the playouts, never able to make the quantum leap needed to enter the promotion fight, but never really involved in the relegation struggle, except in the last rounds. A couple of months from the end they were in a quiet table positioning, having no particular goals to reach made them relax a bit too much, so that they lost some games dangerously slipping towards the playout zone...anyway they were good in recovering soon the right concentration and celebrate their second consecutive permanence in Serie B a couple of rounds from the end. Despite a worst placement comparing to last year (they had reached the15th position!) the season of the bianconeri was overall positive, sometimes even brilliant. That the season would be upward was to be expected, considering the many young players fielded, anyway these were the players who gave brilliance and unpredictability to the play of Aglietti. Obviously, what was missed was performance continuity, which has affected some negative results. Coach Aglietti was excellent in integrating so many new players, some of them coming directly from youth teams at their very first experience among professionals. For most of the season he opted for a 4-2-3-1 system of play, but in the last round switched to a more cautious 4-4-2. As for the single players forward Daniele Cacia, despite the many injuries, has always been a point of reference in attack giving his usual contribution with 12 goals. His substitute, at times playing also alongside him, was young forward on loan from Juventus Andrea Favilli who scored 8 goals. As for the other youngsters put themeselves in the spotlight during the season we should highlight performance of left full-back Gian Filippo Felicioli, who played an excellent first part of the season but missed the second one for a serious injury, attacking midfielder Riccardo Orsolini whose great skills have drawn the attention of Juventus who bought him, and midfielder Francesco Cassata, again on loan from Juventus, who, despite the too many bookings (was the most booked player of the entire league!), showed excellent qualities. Goalkeeper Ivan Lanni was once again decisive between the sticks, able to give self confidence to the entire defence where were significant the performances of Polish Blazej Augustyn and Andrea Mengoni. On the other side was rather disappointing the season of experienced midfielder Luigi Giorgi, also because of the too many injuries, as well as the one of left full-back Daniele Mignanelli whose contribution was below expectations.
