Football Season Review

№15: Brescia

It was a very hard season for the rondinelle who managed to avoid relegation only by defeating Trapani in the last round that made them reach the 15th position. That would have been a troubled season was clear already in August, most of the best players such as Geijo, Mazzitelli and Antonio Caracciolo left and were not replaced with same level players, mainly because of the economic problems of the club. For the same reason young talent Leonardo Morosini was sold to Genoa in January. Moreover they decided to appoint as new coach young and inexperienced Christian Brocchi who so far had only experience with youth teams. Surely it was not the best choice, after a promising beginning the Lombards began losing confidence, if in the first part Brocchi always relied on the 4-3-3 system of play, with the arrival of Stefano Mauri in the winter market switched to the 4-3-1-2...it didn't work as hoped, first because the former Lazio midfielder showed a poor physical condition, then because the coach didn't solve other problems. When in March Brescia were sucked inside the relegation zone, the club owner decided to release Brocchi and appoint more experienced Luigi Cagni. At this point they were in third last place and Cagni's first impact was not very positive...he switched to a much more cautious 3-5-2 system but for a couple of months they floated between the direct relegation zone and the playout one, only in the last month the team had a jolt of pride, won some crucial head-to -head games with direct competitors and, also thanks to heavy point-deductions to their rivals, they managed to earn the chance to play again next year in Serie B. Once again the rondinelle must thank their leader Andrea Caracciolo who, after a poor season (quite predictable given his age and the many physical problems), has taken the team on his shoulders and, scoring crucial goals (14 this season, 153 overall for Brescia being their best scorer ever!), took it above the playout zone. Too many players played well below expectations, beginning with forward Ernesto Torregrossa who came to replace Geijo but scored only 5 goals, striker Federico Bonazzoli who failed to show his renowed skills, former Udinese midfielder Giampiero Pinzi who was called to give his experience contibution to a mainly young team, but failed, and defenders Arturo Calabresi and Leonardo Blanchard who only at times showed their qualities. On the positive side must be highlighted the season of midfielder Dimitri Bisoli, often Brescia's best player, who also scored 5 goals and the one of centre-back on loan from Juventus Filippo Romagna, who started on the bench but soon earned a place in the first eleven.
