Football Season Review

№19: Trapani

Trapani were by far the biggest negative surprise of the season, relegated in Lega Pro after four years in Serie B. Last year they got the best result in the club's history, were only one step away from promotion to the top flight having ended the league in 3rd position and lost the playoff's final with Pescara. One could imagine that repeating the extraordinary past season would have been almost impossible, however, they had the advantage of being a solid group of players who already knew the coach's tactics, so it was expected at least a quiet mid-table positioning. Instead, the entire first half of the season was incredibly bad, they turned the year in last position having collected only 13 points in 21 games. At this point the club decided to fire Serse Cosmi and entrust the bench to former Brescia Alessandro Calori. The new coach switched from the cautious Cosmi's 3-5-2 system of play to a more attacking 4-3-1-2 with Brazilian Coronado as trequartista. After a period of adjustment, necessary for players to adapt to the new system, the Sicilians started flying putting together a long streak of positive results. They gained positions and climbed-up the table till reaching first the playout zone, then went even above it...one month before the end they were safe. However the great effort made, both physically and psychologically, at this point it was felt, they lost the last three games slipping in fourth last position. Unfortunately, since the difference in points with the team ahead was greater than 4 points, they were relegated directly to Lega Pro without even going through the playouts. Hard to say what did not work in the first half of the season, the team seemed empty and confused, without even the desire to fight. Yet in the winter market there have not been many changes, the sudden change of attitude cannot be explained with the change of coach. Certainly it was important the purchase of goalkeeper Mirko Pigliacelli who gave more confidence to the defense of young and completely inexperienced Guido Guerrieri who came directly from Lazio Primavera and was at his first professional experience. In addition to the young goalkeeper, were also disappointing more experienced players like defender Pasquale Fazio, who from being a keystone of the squad ended up on the bench, or skilled midfielder Fausto Rossi who did not give the quality contribution that was expected from him. There were also a lot of injuries to attackers, Citro, Coronado and Jallow missed too many important games. The young Gambian striker was one of the best surprise of the season as well as Agentinean defender on loan from Roma Tiago Casasola.
