Football Season Review

№10: Salernitana

Salernitana season was more or less in line with expectations having finished in 10th position, although the not declared but hoped goal was to enter the fight for a spot in the playoffs. It was probably a realistic goal considering they began the new season with a group of players who already knew each other well and with a reliable and experienced coach. Yet the first half of the league was quite disappointing, the team wasn't able to find a continuity in results and floated in a dangerous part of the table just above the playout zone. Coach Sannino did not seem to find the right tactics, always fielded the team with a 4-4-2 system of play but often changing position to some key players who were struggling to find the right positioning, in particular Campanians' most talented player Alessandro Rosina was fielded sometimes as central midfielder, others as winger and others as striker. Probably these were the reasons that led to a clear breakdown of the relationship between the players and Sannino. At this point, considering that the squad wasn't following anymore its coach, who had also a hard quarrel with the supporters, and that they were in 15th position, only a couple of points above the playouts, after 16 rounds president Lotito decided to dismiss Sannino. Quite surprisingly Lotito (not to be forgotten he is also the president of S.S. Lazio!) replaced him with Alberto Bollini, former coach of Lazio Primavera, who had no experience at this level having always coached youth teams. It seemed like a very risky move and the first rounds seemed to confirm it, Bollini switched from the 4-4-2 of his predecessor to an even more cautious 3-5-2, but results were not the ones expected and the team remained in a dangerous table position. At this point the coach decided to risk much more, switched to a very attacking 4-3-3 system and especially put Rosina on the bench to give space to the new arrival young striker Mattia Sprocati...it was the right move, the seahorses got a long streak of positive results that made them climb the table up till one point from the playoffs. Unfortunately, to do this they consumed so much physical and nervous energies that in the last rounds failed the quantum leap that would have brought them to the top eight teams. As said the biggest disappointment was fantasista Rosina who had a promising beginning but it was expected much more. On the other side were very good the performances of goalkeeper Alfred Gomis and striker Sprocati, both arrived in January, and midfielder Moses Odjer, irreplaceable midfield dam. After a poor start forward Massimo Coda gave a remarkable contribution to the team's upstroke with his 16 goals.
