Football Season Review

№13: Cesena

Cesena were one of the greatest disappointment of the season, last year reached the playoffs being eliminated in the preliminary round, while this season were never in the run for promotion and ended in 13th position. During the summer market the team was definitively weakened given the departure of very strong players such as midfielder Kessie, playmaker Sensi, fantasista Falco and goalkeeper Gomis, they surely strengthened the defense with the arrival of Perticone, Rigione, Balzano and Ligi, but not the other sectors as Schiavone and Vitale are two promising midfielders but not at the level of the players who have been called to replace and in attack there haven't been new purchases. Moreover in the winter market also their only centre-forward, Bosnian international Milan Djuric, left. Anyway the seahorses could count on the fact that they were one of the few teams not to have changed coach so that the squad already had a definite play. If the previous season coach Drago had a great impact on the team that had a brilliant start, things were completely different this season...they had an awful beiginning and, after 12 rounds in which they only won once, the Calabrian coach was fired and replaced by Andrea Camplone. Former Perugia coach immediately switched from the 4-2-3-1 system of play to a similar 4-3-3, but he didn't succeeded in changing the negative trend of results. After the winter break, with the bianconeri clearly involved in the relegation struggle, Camplone decided to change again this time opting for a more cautious 3-5-2. His players took a long time to adapt to the new system, but when they did it things started working very well and in the last couple of months they climbed-up the table till reaching a quiet positioning. One of the main problems of the poor season was surely the high number of injuries, playmaker Emmanuel Cascione missed for long because of a serious injury, as well as defender Isaak Donkor, midfielder Moussa Konè and goalkeeper Michel Agazzi. Moreover the whole weight of the attack was on the shoulders of Camillo Ciano, who had a good season scoring 14 goals, and Alejandro Rodriguez, given that Djuric left in January and yound Nicola Dalmonte was suspended for doping offence. It was expected much more by midfielders Laribi, Schiavone and Vitale who fell short of expectations as well as forward Andrea Cocco who came in January to replace Djuric but only scored 6 goals. Apart from the just mentioned Ciano, it must be highlighted the performance of midfielder Luca Garritano, who, also in the team's worst moments, maintained a high standard.

Player of the Season: Camillo Ciano
