Football Season Review

№14: Avellino

Avellino's season was well below expectations, the stated goal was to reach the playoffs, while they struggled till the end not to be relegated and ended in 14th position, 10 points below the playoff zone. Being among the first eight teams was a very optimistic goal, given the squad, despite a positive and targeted summer transfer market, still lacked the necessary quality, especially in midfield. They made many changes and the team was definitively strengthened compared to last year, they consolidated the defense with centre-backs Alejandro Gonzalez and Berat Djimsiti, the attack with Matteo Ardemagni on loan from Atalanta and young and promising Daniele Verde from Roma, in midfield they changed much but the average level remained almost unchanged. During the summer was appointed Domenico Toscano to replace Attilio Tesser. The former Ternana coach fielded the team usually with a maybe too cautious 3-5-2 asking a great effort to the wingers who anyway failed to repay the trust of the coach. After 16 rounds the wolves were inside the playout zone and never showed a brilliant play, at this point Toscano was removed and the bench entrusted to very experienced Walter Novellino. The new coach immediately changed system of play switching to his usual 4-4-2, they gained some positions getting out of the dangerous part of the table. However only in February players started to feel comfortable with the new coach tactics, they put together a long streak of positive results almost reaching the playoffs...however this trend didn't last much and they soon lost positions anyway remaining in a relatively quiet part of the table. One month before the end the biancoverdi had a very dark period that made them fall inside the playout zone (also because a 3-point deduction!), but a good finale helped them to avoid relegation. The season of many players was below expectations, beginning from strikers Soufiane Bidaoui and Daniele Verde who failed to give the creativity contribution that was asked them. Disappointing also the season of most of the midfielders such as Omeonga, Asmah, Lasik and especially Moretti, taken in the winter market to give a better organization to the play. Moreover probably their best midfielder Davide Gavazzi played only few games because of a serious injury. In attack forward Luigi Castaldo, in the last years Avellino's top scorer, failed to give his usual contribution (scored only 4 goals), mainly because of the many injuries due to his 35 years. On the other side centre-forward Matteo Ardemagni was the wolves' top scorer with 13 goals, in attack also good the contribution of Umberto Eusepi who came in January and scored 6 goals, most of them crucial.

Player of the Season: Matteo Ardemagni
