Football Season Review

№18: Ternana

Ternana's season, as was to be expected, was very troubled and difficult, but in the end the Umbrians supporters could celebrate a probably unexpected permanence in Serie B. That the season would have been complicated had already been understood before the start of the league, in July the club appointed Christian Panucci as new coach, anyway already in August he argued with the club owner and was removed from his position. Benito Carbone came in to replace him but, after a promising start, the rossoverdi sank inside the relegation zone and in January Carbone resigned leaving the team in second last position. At this point the bench was entrusted to Carmine Gautieri, but it was a complete disaster...with the former Lanciano coach on the bench the Umbrians lost six games in a row falling at the very bottom of the table. The club, almost resigned to relegation, at the beginning of March changed again appointing Fabio Liverani...it was definitively the right move, against all odds, collecting 26 points in the last 13 games, the Roman coach succeeded in bringing the team in fifth last position, five points more than Trapani, which also meant to have avoided the playouts. It was a true miracle, back in August few would have bet on the permanence of Ternana in Serie B as the overall quality of the roster looked very poor, very important players left such as Ceravolo, Vitale and Gonzalez and did not seem to had been properly replaced. Only in the winter market there have been adequate purchases that have remarkably elevated the qualitative team level, above all former Lazio defender Mobido Diakitè but especially other former Lazio playmaker Christian Ledesma added experience and fighting spirit to the squad. Also important was the contribution given by center-forward Felipe Avenatti who in the first part of the season was completely disappointing, also because of the too many injuries, while in the end managed to score 12 goals being Ternana's top scorer. Good also the contribution given by young striker on loan from Lazio Simone Palombi who, at his first professional experience, scored 8 goals. In contrast, the season of Uruguayian fantasista Cesar Falletti was well below his standard, only in few games managed to show his great skills. Again disappointing was goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro who was supposed to be a first string player while soon slipped into the bench replaced by most reliable Simone Aresti. Very limited also the contribution given by two experienced midfielders such as Manuel Coppola and Marino Defendi often sidelined because of injuries.
