Football Season Review

№3: Frosinone

All in all the season of Frosinone was very good, the outcome incredibly painful and disappointing...they ended the regular season in 3rd position (sharing the 2nd place with Hellas Verona but with a worse balance in the head-to-head matches) and were eliminated by Carpi in the playoffs' semifinals. Speaking about the season of the canaries we must start from the end...they ruined everything in the last few weeks. They struggled till the penultimate round for direct promotion, as we said they ended with Verona's same number of points, but they've thrown promotion away for the first time in the match with Benevento, a draw would have been enough to overcome Hellas and especially keep the ten-point advantage on the 4th of the table, that would have given them direct promotion without the need of playoffs...till the very last minute of the injury time they were drawing 1-1, but at the 94th minute suffered what became a crucial goal (decisive for the fate of Frosinone and Benevento who won the playoffs reaching Serie A!). In the playoffs' semifinals the men of Marino had another chance, but wasted also this one...in the first leg drew 0-0 in Carpi, therefore at the Matusa stadium they could settle for a draw to reach the final, result that was within their reach especially considering that 6 minutes from the end they were drawing and the opponents were two men down...at this point came the unexpected, the Emilians scored directly from a free-kick and won. A dramatic finale at the end of a season in which they often topped the table showing to be probably the best team of the tournament, probably even better than Hellas Verona. A dramatic finale at the end of a season in which they often topped the table showing to be probably the best team of the tournament, probably even better than Hellas Verona. During the summer, after their relegation to Serie B, coach Stellone resigned and the bench was entrusted to experienced former Udinese Pasquale Marino, a wise choice done to give continuity to the team play, as both coaches like the same attacking football fielding the team with the 4-3-3 system of play. However, after some ups and downs the Sicilian coach decided that a more balanced 4-4-2 suited more the characteristics of players at his disposal...it was the right move as Frosinone reached the top of the table where they stayed for long. The biggest limit of canaries was probably their dependence on the forwards duo Ciofani-Dionisi (respectively 16 and 17 goals this season!) to score, just think that the third highest scorer was center-back Lorenzo Ariaudo with 4 goals, while midfielders didn't make a big contribution, disappointing above all the performance of Danilo Soddimo. In addition to the two forwards shined also playmaker Raffaele Maiello and the three central defenders, Krajnc, Ariaudo and Terranova, who showed great reliability and consistency of performance.
