Football Season Review

№18: CD Aves

A terrible season that ended even worse than what one would have feared. This season’s catastrophic run was the result of a few years of awful management and a constant tension between club and SA holders. There were some important departures from last season’s most notable players, and a whole pack of new players were brought in. Some were hits, like Mohammadi and Welinton, but many were misses. Disaster was predictable after some weeks. Aves was unable to keep a steady XI for a few rounds in a row, with more than 40 players being used over the course of the season. Last season’s coach Inácio didn’t resist more than 8 rounds (7 defeats). His successor Manta was able to pick 3 wins in the first 7 rounds, which was much better than what was about to come on the second half of the season. Defeats started to be the norm, while financial crisis was turned public. The last few months were left unpayed and a total of 12 players left the club before the season ended, most of them important pieces like goalkeeper Beunardeau, midfielder Estrela or attacker Welinton. Club ends the season with a serious question mark about their future: the deep conflict between SA holders and club’s board are a threat on the club’s stability.

Player of the Season: Mehrdad Mohammadi
