Elche secured a return to the top division of Spanish football only two years after relegation, securing a second-placed finish behind champions Levante, as they missed out on the title on the final day after a remarkable campaign in Segunda. Much of their success last season was down to their strong defensive record, conceding a league-best 0.81 goals per 90. Retaining key players defensively, such as experienced goalkeeper Matias Dituro and promising defender David Affengruber, could prove pivotal to Eder Sarabia's hopes to survive with his attractive style of play. The biggest blow of the summer to Elche has come in the shape of Nico Fernandez's departure for MLS after registering 17 goal involvements in the league last season. His absence in the attacking midfield role leaves big shoes to fill and Elche are yet to find a direct replacement. With one of the league's smallest budgets, Elche have not finished higher than 13th since 1977 and will be expecting to be in amongst a relegation battle again this year. Sarabia has instilled a new confidence with his philosophy and is reaping the benefits of stability after two years in charge, and he could become the longest-serving coach the club has had since Pacheta this season.

Target

Fight for survival. Elche have avoided relegation straight back down after promotion the last two times they have come up to the top flight, but the gap between Primera and Segunda is growing.
