Girona enter 2025/26 following a challenging campaign that saw them finish 16th in LaLiga and exit early in both the Copa del Rey and Champions League league phase. Míchel’s side struggled to cope with the demands of three competitions and a thin squad, despite showing flashes of quality—such as a narrow last-minute defeat to PSG in Paris. Veteran forward Stuani once again played a crucial role in helping the team avoid relegation. This summer, there are still many uncertainties. Vítor Reis, a highly promising centre-back from Manchester City, is close to joining and could reinforce a shaky defence. Thomas Lemar arrives with Míchel’s full trust, while Hugo Rincón and Joel Roca add depth—although Rincón must adapt quickly after playing in Segunda. The arrival of Axel Witsel on a free transfer from Atlético Madrid (one-year deal plus an optional second) adds elite experience and tactical flexibility, potentially allowing a return to a five-man defence that could suit Rincón’s strengths. Several key loanees have departed, and the market is far from closed. Claudio Echeverri, the 19-year-old attacking midfielder signed by Manchester City in January, has turned down a move to Girona despite interest from the club and pressure from the City Football Group, favouring a loan to Roma instead. Miguel Gutiérrez’s departure to Napoli, verbally agreed between clubs, is a major blow and leaves a gap at left-back that will need urgent cover. The club is banking on players like Arnau Martínez and Tsygankov regaining top form, while others from last season are expected to step up. Much depends on how Girona finish the transfer window.

Target

Survival remains the clear goal. With so many questions unanswered, the squad currently looks weaker than last year, and expectations are low until late moves provide more clarity.
