Espanyol achieved their goal last season by finishing 14th in LaLiga and avoiding relegation. However, their Copa del Rey campaign was a major disappointment, as they were knocked out in the second round by fourth-tier side Barbastro. This summer saw substantial squad turnover. The biggest loss was goalkeeper Joan García, who joined Barcelona after an outstanding season. In response, Espanyol acted decisively: Roberto, after a promising six-month loan from Braga, was signed permanently and is considered by many the club’s top signing. Tyrhys Dolan came in on a free from Blackburn to add pace and width, while Ramón Terrats, a lifelong Espanyol fan, joined on loan from Villarreal to lead midfield transitions. The defence was reinforced with José Salinas, Miguel Rubio, and Javi Hernández, and veteran keeper Marko Dmitrović will take over in goal. Despite these arrivals, much depends on how well the newcomers settle. Defensive structure and transition play will revolve around Terrats, especially in wider areas. The key question is whether the team can adequately replace the impact of Joan García between the posts. Financial constraints blocked a move for Berkan Kutlu, while Tim Breithaupt has been linked as a midfield option. Depth in some areas remains thin, but with fitness and cohesion, Espanyol could secure safety earlier this season.

Target

Avoid another relegation battle and aim for mid-table stability. With a clearer structure and several smart signings, the team looks slightly stronger than last season.
