A brilliant second half of the season ensured a comfortable finish for Mainz last season after having looked at one time to be struggling to pull away from the relegation zone. Bo Svensson's appointment midway through the campaign was the turning point with the Mainz coach helping his side pick up 33 of the 39 points that they did manage in the end. Mainz have largely retained the squad from last season with keeper Robin Quaison one of the two biggest departures during the summer after deciding not to renew his contract. Danny Latza, Philipp Mwene and Levin Oztunali have also left the club on free transfers while Florian Muller and Pierre Kunde Malong have been sold to Stuttgart and Olympiacos respectively. A solid defense was one of the positives under Svensson and Mainz have looked to further strengthen by bringing in Anton Stach, Silvan Widmer and Anderson Lucoqui while Jae-sung Lee has also been signed on a free transfer. Mainz's performances under Svensson, especially in the final few weeks of the campaign, suggested that they underachieved last season and they will be aiming to finish higher up the table this time around.

Target

Staying well clear of the relegation zone will be the minimum expected out of Mainz this season though they will be looking to finish as close to the top half as possible.
