Mainz looked like they were in serious danger of being relegated following a disastrous first half of the campaign last year only for Urs Fischer's appointment triggering a remarkable turnaround that saw them finish in a comfortable mid-table position. Fischer was appointed just before the winter break with Mainz at rock bottom of the league table but their form in the second half was bettered only by the teams who ultimately finished in the top four. Mainz have held on to the core of their first choice from last season with no significant departures with largely backup players like Nikolas Veratschnig and Nelson Weiper having left the club. Back up keepers Lasse Rieß and Daniel Batz have also left, with the latter being a significant part of the first team last season, especially during Robin Zentner's injury issues. With regards to arrivals, most of the transfer budget has been spent on converting loans into permanent moves with Stefan Posch, Sheraldo Becker and Sota Kawasaki all signing on a permanent basis. Eric Martel arrives on a free transfer to boost the options in the midfield while Fabio Gruber has also been signed to improve the depth in the defence. Alexander Schwolow will provide the depth in the goalkeeping spot though Zentner will be starting the campaign as the first choice. Mainz were one of the most consistent teams in the second half of the season and with the club holding on to their key players while also improving the squad with some good additions in Martel and backup striker Ransford Konigsdorffer, they have the squad to finish comfortably in the top half of the table.

Target

Top half. While Mainz's form under Fischer has raised hopes for a run at a European qualification spots, the club at a minimum will be expected to finish in the top half of the table with form deciding whether they can push further up the table.
