The 2020/21 season was a story of contrasts for Wigan, who were brilliant on the pitch but battled major issues out of it. With the club entering bankruptcy during springtime, they played the late stages of the campaign knowing that they would be given a 12-point deduction. They performed admirably before that and would have comfortably stayed up had it not been for the penalty but, with things being the way they were, they finished next-to-last, two points adrift of safety. A somewhat of a yo-yo club over the recent years, the Latics would normally be expected to bounce straight back up at the first time of asking, but no one is really expecting them to have anything to do with the promotion race, as their financial struggles have caused a player exodus. At the time of writing of this Guide, Wigan have only ten contracted senior players and this number could shrink further before the season starts. Their situation therefore bears some resemblance to Bury's and Bolton's from the previous season and, unless their off-field circumstances suddenly change, it is hard to see how they could stay up.

Target

The Latics are in no shape to compete at the moment and their survival in the division would be seen somewhat of a miracle.
