The main news for Burton is that club legend Nigel Clough is no longer in charge, as he and his two assistants opted to resign in May in a bid to help the club cut costs due to the pandemic. The Brewers opted against bringing in a new manager but look for an option from within, as Jake Buxton has taken over as player-manager. Burton have been reluctant to spend big over the recent years but have thrown caution to the wind this time around, with absolutely all of the signings they have made having considerable experience either in League One or at a similar level. On the other side, the sole player of real note to leave is Scott Fraser, who failed to agree a contract extension with the club. Clough's decision to leave might actually prove beneficial in more ways than one, as it is hard to argue with the notion that things have gone stale for the Brewers lately, with them not really challenging for promotion after dropping from Championship to League One level a couple of seasons ago. On the other side, the decision that the club made regarding his successor is an incredibly risky one and only time will tell whether Buxton has what it takes to succeed as a manager.

Target

They will be aiming for a top half finish at a minimum, but their manager's lack of experience makes them a major unknown going into the new campaign.
