Stadium | Villa Park (opened 1897) Capacity: 42,682 Pitch Size: 105m x 68m Villa Park has been completely rebuilt in various stages since the 1970s. The latest additions being the Doug Ellis Stand which was opened just prior to Euro '96 & The Trinity Road Stand which was opened in 2001. Future plans outline a rebuild of the North Stand. In its place a wrap around stand would be constructed to increase the capacity to over 50,000. More recent proposals have suggested that a 60,000 expansion is being considered. |
Recent History | Aston Villa ended a 24 year stay in the Premier League in 2016. Relegation was a low point in what had been a period of instability for the club. Managers came and went, whilst the much maligned owner Randy Lerner appeared to fall out with everyone from fans to fellow board members. Upon relegation Lerner eventually sold the club in 2016 to Chinese businessman Tony Xia, the American's legacy being one of inactivity and failure to invest according to a large part of the Villa fan base. It would take Villa 3 seasons and another change of ownership (Egyptian company NSWE Group taking control) before they would gain promotion to the Premier League. They went close in 18/19 only to be thwarted by Fulham in the play off final at Wembley. That failure to move up to the top tier highlighted the risks of the promotion, or bust policy adopted by Tony Xia and co. |
