Stadium | Bayer Leverkusen call the Bay Arena home. It is one of the more unique stadiums in Germany as there is an explicit focus on making it family-friendly and on attracting younger fans. As such, the atmosphere at matches can be a little different to the relentless chanting of some other grounds. Although originally opened as far back as 1958, the Bay Arena has undergone several redevelopments since then and has become a very modern facility, with a current capacity of 30,000. There is a unique architectural characteristic of this stadium as one of the stands behind one of the goals is mostly made up of hospitality boxes, creating a sort of horseshoe shape for the other more atmospheric stands. |
Recent History | Bayer Leverkusen earned a reputation as perpetual runners-up in the late Nineties and early Noughties. They were even nicknamed ‘Neverkusen’ by some after coming second in the Bundesliga four times in six years in 1996/97, 1998/99, 1999/2000 and 2001/02 and after reaching and losing the 2002 Champions League final and the 2002 DFB-Pokal final. They still haven’t won anything since then, but in recent years they haven’t come as close to winning the league or to winning cups. They have still, though, regularly qualified for the Champions League and, even when they haven’t made it to Europe’s top club competition, they’ve usually at least qualified for the Europa League. |
