Stadium | The city of Köln has long been a sporting and footballing hotbed and the Müngersdorfer Stadion was the epicentre of this. There has been a stadium on the site of the current home ground of FC Köln since 1923, although the venue was rebuilt in stages for the 2006 World Cup. The current capacity is 50,000 and it is regularly full. With the stands close and right to the pitch, this all contributes to a great atmosphere. |
Recent History | FC Köln have pretty much been the dictionary definition of a yo-yo club in the 21st century. They won promotion to the Bundesliga in 2000, were relegated in 2002, were promoted in 2003, were relegated in 2004, were promoted in 2005, were relegated in 2006, were promoted in 2008, were relegated in 2012, were promoted in 2014, were relegated in 2018 and were promoted again in 2019 as second-tier champions. It’s clear to see that they’re the kind of club that is on that limit between first-tier and second-tier status. While the uncertainty that comes with being a yo-yo club isn’t helpful, the fact that they have one of the better modern Bundesliga academies has helped the club in recent times. |
