Stadium | Merkur Spiel-Arena is Fortuna Düsseldorf’s home ground. The venue, which has a closable roof and which is also used for non-footballing events such as concerts, has a football capacity of 57,000. It’s not always full as this is a very big stadium for a club of Fortuna Düsseldorf’s size. But Düsseldorf is a big city and the club could little by little re-attract many of the fans who stopped going during the years down in the regional leagues. |
Recent History | Founded in 1895, Fortuna Düsseldorf is one of the oldest clubs in all of German football. This club was a regular competitor in the first years of the Bundesliga and often challenged near the top of the table in the Seventies. However, they’ve fallen away a lot since then. They started the 21st century fluctuating between the third and fourth tiers of German football, but have little by little returned to the elite, first by consolidating the club as a Bundesliga 2 team. They were promoted to the Bundesliga again in 2018 and finished 10th in 2018/19 to suggest they are well and truly back. In Friedhelm Funkel, they have a coach who has been at the club since 2016 and who has been a major part of their rebuild. |
