Stadium | The 54,000-capacity Borussia-Park is the home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Opened in 2004 in time for the World Cup in Germany two years later, it is one of the more modern stadiums in the Bundesliga. With two tiers, closed corners and a roof that keeps in a lot of the sound, the atmosphere is a good one and average attendances are always towards the top of the rankings as this is a huge and historical club. |
Recent History | Borussia Mönchengladbach haven’t won the Bundesliga since 1976/77, but this is a club with a very proud history. With this club boasting five Bundesliga titles, all of them won in the Seventies, only five clubs can claim to have more than they do. The Seventies was their decade of dominances as they won the league five times, finished runners-up twice, won two UEFA Cups and reached the 1977 European Cup final, where they were defeated by Liverpool. In more recent times, Borussia Mönchengladbach have struggled to keep up with the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. They’ve even spent some time in Bundesliga 2, but after both of their relegations they were able to come back up again quickly and have now been in the top flight consistently since 2008, often qualifying for the Europa League and, occasionally, for the Champions League. The academy is very important at this club and has been a main reason for their success, with players such as Marc-André ter Stegen, Mahmoud Dahoud and Amin Younes among the more high-profile graduates of recent times, while several other capable mid-table-level players have also come through. |
