Stadium | Anfield (opened 1884) Capacity: 54,742 Pitch Size: 101m x 68m Anfield's Spion Kop is one of the most famous football stands in England, if not the world. Renowned for its noise and the intimidation factor that it imposes on visiting teams, it was said to be a big reason why owners Fenway Sports felt relocating the club was not an option. After much talk about moving to a location more suited to building a bigger arena, Liverpool have committed to staying at Anfield. In 2014 the club signed an agreement with Liverpool City Council to redevelop the area. Since 2015 Liverpool have been improving the stadium. The aim is that once new plans are submitted, the capacity will be increased to 60,000. |
Recent History | Liverpool have had some formidable managers over the decades. Under Bill Shankly they won the First Division 3 times, 2 FA Cups, 4 Charity Shields and the UEFA Cup. Ian Paisley succeeded him and put together an extraordinary haul of 20 trophies. That included 3 European Cups, 6 League titles and a UEFA Cup. Further glory came under Joe Fagan with a European Cup, League Cup and the League. 1985 & 1989 would be remembered for two of the most tragic events in English football. First the Heysel Stadium disaster where Liverpool fans broke through a fence and charged Juventus fans who were crushed under a collapsing wall. In 1989 the Hillsborough disaster saw 96 Liverpool fans crushed to death against the perimeter fencing as police lost control of the number of fans entering the ground. Kenny Dalglish was manager throughout this period. Under his leadership the club won 3 league titles and 2 FA Cups, but the Hillsborough disaster was said to be a big factor in him resigning in 1991. Further silverware would follow under Graeme Souness (FA Cup 1992), Roy Evans (League Cup 1995), Houllier (FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001 & League Cup 2003), Rafael Benitez (Champions League 2005 & FA Cup 2006), Dalglish (League Cup 2012) & Jurgen Klopp (Champions League 2019 & Premier League 2020). |
