Stadium | The American Express Community Stadium (opened 2011) Capacity: 30,750 Pitch Size: 105m x 69m Brighton sold their stadium, The Goldstone Ground in 1995 without plans to secure a new ground. A share deal with Gillingham followed, before the team returned to Brighton at the Withdean Stadium. Brighton chose the site of their current stadium at Falmer as far back as 1998/99, however it would take some 10 years before construction could begin due to planning permission wrangles between the club and the local authority. Since the stadium was opened, the club have expanded capacity twice to the current 30,750 seats. |
Recent History | Despite being without a stadium to call their own, Brighton won Division 3 in 2000-01. This would be followed by a second promotion as champions under Peter Taylor the following season. In 2010-11 Brighton won League 1 in what was their final season at their temporary Withdean home. In 2009 Tony Bloom took over as chairman and it was he who secured the funding for The Amex stadium to be built. By 2011 the club were playing games in their new ground. Playoff agony would follow in 2012-13, 2013-14 & despite a 22 game unbeaten run in 2015-16. Premier League promotion was finally clinched in 2016-17. |
