Stadium | Stamford Bridge (opened 1877) Capacity: 40,834 Pitch Size: 103m x 67.5m The Stamford Bridge which we see today was largely rebuilt in the 1990s under then chairman Ken Bates. At that time the club dispensed with the trademark running track that had distanced fans from the on pitch excitement. In 1997 the "Chelsea Pitch Owners" took control of the freehold, which includes the turnstiles, the pitch & stadium naming rights. The idea being that Stamford Bridge could never be sold to property developers. In subsequent years Chelsea Football club sought to buy back the freehold in order to expand Stamford Bridge, but have failed to convince Chelsea Pitch Owners to agree. Threats by Roman Abramovich to move the club to a new location failed to materialise in 2012, something he appeared willing to follow through on even if it would mean having to rename the club. |
