Stadium | Fiorentina used to play their home games in the Via Bellini Stadium. As of 1931 they moved to what became known as the Artemio Franchi Stadium from 1993. It was built by Pier Luigi Nervi, one of the leading Italian architects of his time. It became one of the best Italian stadiums and has hosted games for all the main competitions played in the country. The stadium was once praised for the quality of the pitch and some of its architectural features such as the Marathon tower and the spiral stairs. It underwent major redevelopment in 1990, but is now considered obsolete. For this reason, the club plans to build a new stadium. It will belong to them, rather than the local authority, but as of now they are still in the discussion phase with the council to determine the site of the new arena. |
Recent History | Fiorentina last won silverware back in 2001 by winning what was their 6th Coppa Italia ever. A year later they would have to deal with relegation. Further disappointment came with the bankruptcy of Club President Mario Cecchi Gori. As a result the club went into administration and was denied entry to Serie B. Re-born with a new name, Florentia Viola, which was subsequently changed to ACF Fiorentina, the club was bought by the entrepreneur Diego Della Valle. In just 3 years the club made it all the way up to Serie A from Serie C2. During the 17-year-long Della Valle reign Fiorentina finished 4th five times, and played in the UEFA Cup semifinals in 2007-2008. This was the height of the Della Valle era and a sign of the lack of momentum the club had was a being involved in a fight for survival in the 2018-2019 season. In June 2019, Della Valle sold the club to the Italian-American Rocco Commisso, who promised significant investment and a return to the upper reaches of Italian football. |
