Stadium | Coliseum Alfonso Pérez in the Madrid suburb of Getafe is home to the football team of the same name. The 17,000-capacity ground is quite modern, having been constructed in 1998. It is, though, owned by the local council and this makes it difficult for further redevelopment work to be carried out. The stadium is quite unique in the sense that all fans enter through the same row of turnstiles and simply walk round a circuit that leads to all of the ground’s stands, only one of which is covered. Getafe often feature towards the bottom of stadium occupancy percentages as the ground is definitely too big for the size of their fanbase. This suburb is similar in size to neighbouring suburb Leganés, who have a stadium of 12,000 capacity that is the right kind of size for their needs. |
Recent History | Getafe secured their first ever promotion to LaLiga in 2004 and they did a great job of consolidating their place in the top flight. They even reached back-to-back Copa del Rey finals in 2007 and 2008, although they lost on both occasions. At the end of the 2015/16 season, they were relegated back to the second tier to end a 12-year run in the top flight, but were able to bounce straight back up under the coaching of José Bordalás. He then helped them secure an eighth place finish in their first season back in the big time and then a fifth place finish in the following campaign of 2018/19, earning them qualification for the Europa League. |
