Getafe have been one of the most active clubs in this summer’s transfer market, having made a total of 13 permanent signings so far. Only a few of these have been the triggering of purchase options on last season’s loan deals, meaning that there is a whole host of brand new faces at the club ahead of the new season, while just as many players have departed. Overall, the talent level of the squad has probably improved, but it remains to be seen if all of these new players will gel with their new teammates and if there will be good team chemistry at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in 2018/19. There are a lot of different nationalities in this squad now and it would be very easy for cliques to form and for there to be disgruntlement in the dressing room. The good thing for Getafe is that they do have continuity in the dugout, with Jose Bordalas staying on for another season after doing so well last year, when he led newly promoted Getafe to eighth place and to the very brink of European qualification. Employing a simple and counter attacking 4-4-2 formation, Bordalas’ football wasn’t very exciting, but it was effective and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be once again this season. Getafe have retained some of their best players from last season, namely Djene, Mauro Arambarri, Markel Bergara, Angel Rodriguez and Jorge Molina, while the only really significant loss has been that of last year’s starting goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. To replace him, they’ve signed three good goalkeepers in David Soria, Leandro Chichizola and Ruben Yanez, so there shouldn’t be much of a drop-off at that position. There is, therefore, reason to be optimistic at Getafe this season. They have been aggressive in the transfer market and their project is clearly an ambitious one.

Target

Getafe only just missed out on European qualification last season and, having strengthened the squad this summer, they’ll hope to sneak into the Europa League places this time around.

Season Review
2018/2019

№5: Getafe

This was a historic campaign for Getafe as they came in fifth, which is their best ever finish. They were even competing for Champions League football, but ultimately had to settle for Europa League qualification. Getafe’s success has to be attributed to coach Jose Bordalas. When he took over at the club in the 2016/17 season they were second-bottom of the second division and he led them to promotion, to a mid-table LaLiga finish and now to fifth place. His simple 4-4-2 approach is quite a defensive one and his team conceded just 35 goals, the joint-second best record in the division. This was the foundation of their success and it really helped to have the reliable Djene at centre-back. Yet Getafe also scored enough goals at the other end thanks to their three excellent strikers Jaime Mata, Jorge Molina and Angel Rodriguez. They took turns to fit into the front two and combined for 36 LaLiga goals, which was 75 percent of Getafe’s total of 48. There was, perhaps, an overreliance on their three strikers to score the goals and whenever these players were unavailable or not at their best the team struggled as they didn’t have many goals from midfield or from defence. It’s hard, though, to criticise Getafe for what they’ve done this season with their limited budget. This was an excellent campaign and the goal for next season must be to try to repeat this, perhaps while improving the squad depth.
