Stadium | Until 1963 Hellas Verona played their home games in the “Old Bentegodi”, a building placed in the centre of the city that could host only 5000 supporters. It was eventually demolished in the 1980s. From then on they moved to the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium, which had no covering but had the athletics track and a capacity of 40,000 supporters. For this reason, it was also known as the “40,000 Stadium”. During the 1980s, when Hellas Verona were among the top Italian clubs, the stadium was deemed to be below par. This in combination with Italy hosting the 1990 World Cup meant that there was justification for redevelopment. Amongst other things an additional tier was added, a roof was installed, safety spaces were added, as were numbered seats. Ironically the capacity barely changed. In 2009 a new covering was installed: it was entirely made with solar panels, thus providing the Stadium with one of the biggest photovoltaic systems in a sports area in the whole of Europe. |
Recent History | Hellas Verona were at their best in the 1980s. 2 defeats in the Coppa Italia final came before they won the Scudetto. It was 1984-1985 and coach Osvaldo Bagnoli was the architect of their successes. After relegation to Serie B in 1989-1990, Verona met with some dark decades. Failures on the pitch were compounded by bankruptcies. Even when achieving promotion to Serie A, they never managed to remain in the top flight for more than 3 seasons. In 2006-2007 more doom and gloom came with relegation to Serie C1 some 64 years after their last appearance in the third level of Italian football. As a Serie B club they were acquired by Maurizio Setti, a clothing entrepreneur from Carpi in 2011-2012. Since then, Hellas have made it to Serie A several times, never going higher than the 9th place. Promotion came in the 2018-2019 season via the Serie B playoffs. |
