Stadium | Between 1926 and 1930 Napoli played their home games at the Stadio Militare dell’Arenaccia. President Giorgio Ascarelli commissioned a new Stadium, first called the Stadio Vesuvio, re-christened the Stadio Ascarelli and finally the Stadio Partenopeo. It was fully redeveloped with capacity increased for the 1934 World Cup. It was raised to the ground during the war. As a result Napoli moved to the Stadio Arturo Collana, but this venue proved inadequate for their needs with supporters often encroaching onto the pitch. In December 1959 they moved to the Stadio San Paolo, which is their home today. At the time it was considered one of the most beautiful venues in the world thanks to the originality of its design. It is one of the few Stadia to have hosted all the main sports events like Olympic Games, Universiades and more. The San Paolo has been upgraded over time but as far back as the 1990s and throughout the 2000s the years started to take their toll. A major redesign occurred in the 2010s in order to meet the UEFA standards and to host the Universiades. |
Recent History | Napoli’s most successful years were of course during the Maradona and President Ferlaino era. During that time at the end of the 1980s Napoli won 2 Serie A titles and 1 UEFA Cup. Unfortunately the club endured some dark times after that between the late 1990s and the early 2000s. In crisis on and off the pitch, the club struggled to make the books balance and thanks to poor performances by the team they plummeted down to the third tier of Italian football. It was in 2004 and only once the club had collapsed financially, that film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis bought Napoli. In 3 years he brought them back to the Serie A and guided them back to Europe. During the De Laurentiis era, Napoli have won 2 Coppa Italias and 1 Italian Super Cup and reached the semifinals of the Europa League (2014-2015). The 2010s saw Napoli achieve four 2nd place and three 3rd place finishes. Indeed during that time they became the most consistent Scudetto challengers to the all conquering Juventus. Napoli might be considered under-achievers due to a lack of silverware, but they won many plaudits due to the quality of the football they play, none more so than when Maurizio Sarri was at the helm. |
