Stadium | Cagliari play their home games in the Sardinia Arena, a temporary ground that will be demolished once the new Stadium is completed. It will stand where the Sant’Elia Stadium used to be, Cagliari's home from 1970 to 2012. “Sant’Elia” was built right after the triumphant 1969-1970 campaign which saw Cagliari win the Scudetto. At that point they left the “Amsicora”, where they had played since 1951, after 20 years spent in the “Comunale Via Pola”. The new stadium hosted 70,000 supporters but was inadequate in terms of infrastructure. It originally had parking space for only 200 cars, and was eventually condemned. Cagliari played some games in Trieste and later moved to the Is Arenas, the stadium of the neighbouring Quartu Sant’Elena. The capacity of the ground was increased through the construction of new stands, but despite this was never able to fully comply with safety standards. It was for this reason that the Sardinia Arena build was forced upon the club. |
Recent History | Cagliari were one of the best Italian teams between the late 1960s and the early 1970s, with Gigi Riva scoring at will. They hit the headlines again when reaching the UEFA Cup semifinals in 1993-1994. This was the beginning of President Massimo Cellino’s 20-year reign, characterised by few ups and many downs. Between relegations & promotions Cagliari were unable to register any top 10 finishes. In 2014 the club was eventually sold to Tommaso Giulini, an entrepreneur from Milan close to Massimo Moratti (former Inter president). Despite grand ambitions, the new adventure began with relegation to Serie B. Cagliari immediately returned to Serie A, but regardless of investment they failed to avoid further relegation battles. The 2010s ended better with a competitive team led by coach Rolando Maran. Under him, European football would return to Cagliari and Sardinia. |
