Stadium | Roma first played their games in the Motovelodromo Appio, before moving to the Stadio Nazionale del Partito Nazionale Fascista in 1928-1929. The following season they started their campaign in the Stadio della Rondinella which was Lazio’s ground, and then moved to the Campo Testaccio, where they played until 1939-1940. At this point Roma returned to the Stadio Nazionale which had been enlarged and restructured for the 1934 World Cup. It was here that they won their first Scudetto. Roma continued to play in that Stadium (later renamed Stadio Torino, following the Superga tragedy which saw all the invincible Torino players die in a plane accident) until 1953. The next move was more permanent and saw them transfer to the Stadio Olimpico. The stadium has been frequently redeveloped and was even demolished, then rebuilt in preparation for the 1990 World Cup. Whilst the rebuild was going on Roma had to move to the Stadio Flaminio for the 1989-1990 campaign. Roma have put forward a proposal for the construction of their own stadium, but at this point it hasn’t been approved by the local authority. |
Recent History | Having been successful in the early 1980s when they won their second Scudetto, Roma grabbed the headlines once again between the end of the 1990s and the early 2000s. In2000-2001 they triumphed in Serie A for the third time with Sensi as President and coach Fabio Capello in the dugout. The 20-year-long Francesco Totti era saw the midfield maestro skipper the Wolves from 1998 to 2017. During that time Roma also won 2 Coppa Italias and 2 Italian Super Cups. They were constantly able to challenge for the Scudetto during this time with the exception of a mediocre period in the early 2010s. After hitting the rocks from a financial point of view, the club was taken over by American entrepreneur, James Pallotta. Under his guidance they returned to the top 4 in Serie A and reached the Champions League semifinals in 2017-2018. The last time they had achieved such success in Europe was in the 1983-1984 season. Despite these results Pallotta is considering the sale of the club, disappointed by what he sees as an insurmountable new stadium issue. |
